I was reading a letter in the newspaper the other day a letter from an Anglican Bishop commenting on the division that the issue of women priests has caused in the church.
I find it odd that one gender should be considered more spiritual than the other, some of the most spiritual material I’ve read has been written by women!
It’s tempting to take the cyncial Bill Hicks view: “Great, now it’s priests of both sexes I don’t listen to!”, but I do find that the church has a great deal to say of spiritual benefit, if only it could get past its’ issues.

Indeed, in many spiritual cultures it is the women who are deemed closer to spirit. Though beyond gender, the ancient Taoists sometimes described the Tao as a Great Mother.
Of course, with such male orientation of our western society it is different. God is spoken of as He and Him. And yet, the Holy Spirit that inhabits us all? Surely beyond gender. Still, any interpretations written by humanity are likely to have such personal reflections.
Here’s something interesting: Try to imagine living in a matriarchal society. I admit I have trouble doing so. What does that suggest about how my identity is wrapped up in both my gender and my gender’s standing in society?
