Well, I finally upgraded my PC the other day and I’ve got Ubuntu 6.10 back! Know what? It feels good to back on Free Software, I much prefer using Ubuntu to Windows any day of the week!

For me, one of the unexpected bonuses was a music player called “Banshee”. It’s a very good music player, but also contains social aspects in that it talks to the Last.fm social music site about what you’re listening to. The result is on the new box on the right hand side of my blog, it’s the top 10 artists I’ve listened to recently. What the heck, at least you can all have a giggle at my musical tastes now! :-)

Ah! Awesome, I too recently moved to Ubuntu after being with Windows. The free software ideology appeals to me greatly too, and I’m learning a lot and finding it is enhancing my appreciation of what a GUI actually does. I’ve been using RhythmBox for my music, but I’ll take a look at Banshee if you’re recommending it.

    Nice one!

One thing to remember if you decide to use the audioscrobber (last.fm) plugin is that theres a bug in the plugin that you have to work round.

It make Banshee crash everytime it talks to last.fm. It’s fixed in the next version, but they were good enough to post this procedure:

Open a shell and from your home directory run:

    ‘mkdir .gnome2/banshee/plugins’

Now that’s fixed, I’m a definite Banshee convert!
