Social networks.

I was reading an interesting article by Cory Doctorow and as I know a few folks on Facebook and other such sites, I thought I’d link to the article here.

It’s an interesting read and I have to say I can certainly see his point, though he doesn’t cover the use of Facebook and other social sites for spamming.  I know I had to deal with spam friend requests on MySpace, and I expect to have to do the same with Facebook in the fullness of time.

It makes you question, as I have been, the exact amount of quality Facebook adds to a persons experience in cyberspace.

I got my first spam on LibraryThing of all places recently. Some author (unpublished or vanity-published, I’m not sure) added one book to his library, then started hitting hundreds of people with requests that same day. I’m not even sure what he hoped to accomplish there, as the friends function is not the main feature of the site by far.

I’ve heard buzz very recently (among the WordPress community especially) about Facebook “fan sites.” You can probably guess what those are. I’m thinking you’ll see the spam sooner rather than later.

I got my first one on MySpace, in fact the spam was the reason I dropped MySpace for Facebook.

After some of the privacy issues surrounding Facebook and other social network sites recently I’m trusting them less and less.
